  Back to General

In this informative training, Jeffrey Miller, JD, with Disability Rights Texas, discusses self-determination, supported decision-making, and alternatives to guardianship. Participants will explore how decision-making supports can help adults with disabilities maintain choice, control, and dignity while receiving the assistance they need to make daily and major life decisions.

This session reviews the impact of guardianship, the importance of dignity of risk, and the legal and practical alternatives that may support people without unnecessarily restricting their rights. Participants will also learn about supported decision-making agreements, the role of trusted supporters, and strategies for using person-centered approaches that promote autonomy, safety, and meaningful participation.

Objectives

Upon completion of this webinar, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the connection between choice, self-determination, and life control for people with disabilities.

  2. Identify potential impacts of guardianship, including how it may limit decision-making rights, independence, and self-determination.

  3. Recognize alternatives to guardianship, including powers of attorney, representative payees, ABLE accounts, supports and services, and person-centered planning.

  4. Explain the purpose of supported decision-making agreements and the role of a supporter in helping an adult with a disability understand options, responsibilities, and consequences while preserving the person’s final decision-making authority.
