Career Development in Job Placement Part 1 

Career Development Part 1 introduces participants to the foundational phase of career development through structured job exploration activities. This section focuses on helping individuals with disabilities reflect on their experiences, interests, strengths, and values as they begin the process of identifying meaningful employment goals. Participants will learn how early life experiences, education, training, and work history influence career direction and how these insights support informed choice and person centered employment planning. Emphasis is placed on building self awareness, identifying transferable skills, and laying the groundwork for competitive integrated employment.


Part 1 Learning Objectives

By the end of Part 1, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the purpose of job exploration within the career development process.
  2. Identify how early experiences, education, and work history inform career interests and strengths.
  3. Support individuals with disabilities in exploring personal interests and preferred work activities.
  4. Assist individuals in identifying potential career themes and initial employment goals.
  5. Apply job exploration strategies that promote informed choice and person centered planning.

About the presenter:

Professor Phillip Rumrill grew up in Vermont and attended Keene State College and the Univeristy of Arkansas. He is currently the professor of Counselor Education and Director of Research at HDI (Human Development Institute) at the university of Kentucky. He has dedicated himself in rehabiliation counseling graduate programs for the past 35 years along. He has also invested his time in other endevors researching neurological disabilities, people with multiple sclerosis, traumatic brain injuries, autism implementation of the ADA services and outcomes in his state, veterans with disabilties, and most recently the aspect of aging and disability.
