The involvment in the crimincal justice system as well as incarceration is sweeping the state of Texas. It is important to undestand the intersectionality of disability and incarceration. The criminalization of intellectual disability, mental illness, and substance abuse disorders is seen in the collected data and discussed by the presentor. Understanding the statistics, studies, and strategies with help develop improved involvment and outcomes for those with disabilities within the competitive integrated employment pursuits.
Objectives
Upon completion of this webinar, participants will be able to:
- Examine the criminal justice system involvement and the incarceration epidemic that is sweeping Texas and the entire nation.
- Examine the link between justice system involvement and poverty, race/ethnicity, trauma, and disability.
- Present proven strategies for assisting people with disabilties who have justice system involvement in their competitive integrated employment pursuits.
About the presenters:
Professor Phillip Rumrill grew up in Vermont and attended Keene State College and the Univeristy of Arkansas. He is currently the professor of Counselor Education and Director of Research at HDI (Human Development Institute) at the university of Kentucky. He has dedicated himself in rehabiliation counseling graduate programs for the past 35 years along. He has also invested his time in other endevors researching neurological disabilities, people with multiple sclerosis, traumatic brain injuries, autism implementation of the ADA services and outcomes in his state, veterans with disabilties, and most recently the aspect of aging and disability.
