Counselor education teaches therapists to use verbal engagement, social communication, and other non-verbal techniques to develop a therapeutic relationship with clients. Characteristics of the diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder make building that relationship a challenge. Counselors and employment support professionals must adapt strategies and techniques to meet the unique needs of this specific population.
Objectives
Upon completion of this webinar, participants will be able to:
1. Understand the DSM-5 diagnostic criteria for ASD
2. Recognize challenges to counseling this population
3. Understand unique issues related to females with ASD, and
4. Be presented strategies that can help build a therapeutic alliance with a client diagnosed with ASD
About the presenters:
Marc Ellison is the executive director of the West Virginia Autism Training Center, located at Marshall University in Huntington, WV. Dr. Ellison is a Licensed Professional Counselor who has worked for mor than 35 years to provide person-centered support, services, and advocacy to individuals who live with Autism Spectrum Disorder, their families, and those who support them. Dr. Ellison earned a BA and an MA in Counseling, and an Ed.D. in Educational Leadership from Marshall University. He has authored or co-authored several publications specific to supporting students diagnosed with ASD, is a former President of the WV Licensed Professional Counselors Association, and is a member of the Panel of Professional Advisors for the Autism Society of America.
